The PEFA Secretariat has published Volume I of the PEFA Handbook ‘The PEFA Assessment Process: Planning, Managing and Using PEFA’ on its website. Volume I is primarily targeted at government officials, development partners, and PEFA assessment managers involved in undertaking PEFA assessments and explains the phases and steps in a standard PEFA assessment process.

Volume I builds on the knowledge gained from more than 500 PEFA assessments from around the globe. That experience has demonstrated that a well-planned and systematic process is essential for the efficient and timely completion of a comprehensive, evidence-based PEFA assessment. Volume I therefore highlights the key tasks, responsibilities, and timelines in planning and managing a PEFA assessment, from initial discussions to preparation of the final report and beyond, including how the PEFA assessment can be used to inform public financial management reform dialogue and action planning among stakeholders.

Volume I is the second of four volumes of the PEFA Handbook being developed by the PEFA Secretariat:

  • Volume I: PEFA Assessment Process—Planning, Managing and Using PEFA
  • Volume II: PEFA Assessment Fieldguide
  • Volume III: Preparing the PEFA Report
  • Volume IV: Supplementary Information for Assessing PFM Performance

Volumes III and IV are currently being developed and will be released in comings months. Users will be informed when new volumes are available.
